The phenomenon allows users to upload a clear photograph and provide instructions to an AI image tool. The AI then preserves the person’s facial features while altering their clothing, hairstyle, background, lighting, and overall photographic aesthetic to match the 1980s .

Users can create various styles, including classic studio portraits, family album photos, Bollywood poster looks, college photographs, wedding pictures, and street-style shots .

Political Leaders Join the Trend

Several prominent Indian political figures have participated in the viral trend. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal shared an AI-generated image with the caption, ‘Vibing to the 80s trend’ .

‘Personal photographs, contacts and other private data could be at risk if users grant unnecessary permissions to suspicious applications,’ a senior Cybercrime official said .

Users have been advised to download applications only from official app stores and to avoid APK files shared through unknown links . ‘They (users) should also carefully check an app’s developer, permissions, and source before installation,’ the official said .

The trend continues to spread across social media platforms, with new AI-generated retro portraits being shared daily. Users are advised to review AI-generated outputs for inconsistencies in facial features, hands, text, and background details before sharing .
