Lena Dunham has welcomed her first child, a baby girl, with her husband Luis Felber. The couple confirmed the birth through an op-ed written by Dunham and published by Vogue on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old creator and star of the HBO series Girls and Felber, a musician who is also 40, have been married since September 2021. The couple’s daughter was born via surrogate after a long journey with fertility challenges.

In the Vogue essay, Dunham described the moment of her daughter’s arrival, which came 13 days past the due date. She wrote that the baby arrived ‘in the face of a solar eclipse and a meteor shower.’

Dunham recalled sitting in a hospital bed and waiting for a first glimpse of her child. She wrote: ‘I sat on a hospital bed, between the legs of a woman I hadn’t known a year ago, waiting for a glimpse of this person who I had been waiting for with something related to patience, but also none at all.’

She described being focused on the surrogate during the birth. ‘I was so focused on our surrogate – in awe at her concentration, her period of quiet followed by what sounded like a roar – I forgot to look down until I heard our baby’s cry,’ Dunham wrote.

Dunham then recounted her first words to her daughter after a midwife instructed her to speak to the newborn. She wrote: ‘Hello I said. I’m your mama. You…you look nothing like I thought you would, but exactly right. We’ve been waiting for you, do you know that? It was so nice of you to come.’

She described the feeling of that moment as being ‘bashful and dizzy with joy.’

The Surrogacy Journey

Dunham wrote in detail about her relationship with the surrogate. She recalled first meeting the woman at a coffee shop in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, accompanied by her mother. They discussed their lives and the surrogate’s reasons for wanting to undertake the process.

She admitted she had expected to feel jealousy toward a woman who could carry her child. Instead, she wrote that she felt reassured knowing her daughter would be ‘tucked into someone who radiated such safety.’

Dunham also wrote about preparing for the baby’s arrival. She bought baby clothes, drawing on past experience working at a children’s boutique. She said her daughter’s birth did not go exactly as planned, as the couple’s temporary housing near the surrogate had become unavailable by the time the baby arrived.

Health Background

Dunham has spoken publicly about her reproductive health for years. She underwent a hysterectomy at age 31 due to complications from endometriosis. The surgery ended her ability to carry a child herself.

She wrote about that decision in an earlier Vogue essay and discussed it on NBC’s TODAY earlier this year. Dunham said the pain she experienced was overriding and that she only began to feel the weight of the surgery’s implications afterward.

In April, Dunham reflected on her hopes of becoming a mother. She said that meeting people who had built families in different ways helped her become more comfortable with the possibility of taking a different path to parenthood. She stated: ‘Whatever way it happens, I will feel so grateful.’

Current Status

According to reports, Dunham and Felber are currently in the United States with their daughter. They plan to return to their home in North London, where Felber is from. Dunham has not publicly disclosed her daughter’s name or exact birth date. Vogue shared the first photo of Dunham holding her baby on Wednesday via Instagram.
